Reporting Cadence That Keeps Clients Informed Without Noise

2 min read

Reporting fails in two directions. Too little and the client feels uninformed. Too much and the important signal disappears into a stream of screenshots. A cadence with three clearly separated layers solves both problems.

The daily layer should be an exception report

Send something daily only when something has gone wrong or something material has changed. A short note covering what happened, what is being done and when the client will hear again. Silence on a normal day is a feature, not a lapse.

The weekly layer should be about actions

Summarise what was changed in the account during the week, why, and what is planned next. This is a working document for the people closest to the account, and it should be readable in two minutes.

The monthly layer should be about the business

Bring delivery against plan, the commercial result, and the decisions required. Keep the charts to the ones that support those three points and move everything else to an appendix.

Keep every layer to one page

The one-page constraint forces prioritisation and makes the reports comparable month over month. Long reports are read once and then filed; short reports are read every time.

Ask what the client actually reads

Six months into an engagement, ask which reports are opened and which decisions came from them. Adjusting the cadence to what is genuinely used is a mark of a working relationship rather than a weakness in reporting.
