Payment Methods and Trust Signals by Market

2 min read

Cross-border checkout completes at very different rates from one market to the next, and a large part of the difference lies in whether the visitor recognises the payment options and the reassurance around them.

Offer what the market actually uses

Card acceptance is necessary almost everywhere, but it is not always sufficient. Several markets complete a significant share of online transactions through local bank transfer schemes, wallets or instalment options that shoppers already hold. Missing the method a market prefers costs orders that no amount of media optimisation recovers.

Place reassurance where the decision is made

Security and guarantee messaging belongs next to the payment step, not on a separate page. The visitor’s doubt appears at the moment of entering details, and that is where the answer should be visible.

Make the return policy easy to find before checkout

Linking the returns policy from the cart and the payment step reduces the number of visitors who leave to check it and never return. The policy itself should be short enough to read on a phone.

Show the entity behind the site

For cross-border shoppers, knowing which company is selling, where it is registered and how to contact it materially affects confidence. A visible company name, registered address and working contact address answer the question before it is asked.

Test the local experience, not just the translation

Run a purchase from a connection in the target market using a locally issued payment method. Problems that only appear under local conditions are the ones that cost the most, and they are invisible from a desktop test in the home market.
