Building an Audience Architecture for Meta Prospecting

2 min read

Most prospecting accounts are built by adding audiences until results appear. A clearer approach is to decide, before building anything, what job each audience is doing and how you will know whether it worked.

Three jobs, three kinds of audience

Prospecting audiences serve one of three purposes: reaching people similar to existing customers, reaching people who have shown relevant intent without visiting you, and reaching a broad market to gather creative learning. Each has a different success measure. Similar audiences are judged on acquisition cost against a value target, intent audiences on the quality of downstream engagement, and broad audiences on how quickly they produce a usable creative read.

Keep exclusions explicit and stable

Define one exclusion set at campaign level rather than repeating it in every ad set. Existing customers, recent purchasers and people already in an active retargeting window should be excluded consistently, otherwise the same person is counted as a new prospect in one report and a returning visitor in another.

Do not over-segment early

A new account with dozens of small ad sets will not gather enough data in any of them to learn. Start with a small number of well-funded audiences and split only when a specific hypothesis needs its own budget line.

Review the architecture, not just the results

Every quarter, list the audiences currently running and the last date each produced a result that changed a decision. Audiences that have not influenced a decision for two quarters are usually taking budget from one that would.
