LinkedIn Ads for B2B Software: Targeting Without Waste

LinkedIn offers the most precise B2B targeting available in paid media, and the highest cost per click to match. Precision is only worth paying for when the targeting actually narrows the audience to people who can influence a purchase.
Filter by role, not by industry alone
Industry targeting is easy to set and usually too broad to be efficient. Combining a narrow set of job functions with seniority and company size produces a smaller, more expensive, and far more responsive audience. The aim is not the cheapest click but the shortest path to a buying conversation.
Match the format to the funnel stage
Single image and document ads perform well for explanatory content aimed at people researching a problem. Conversation ads suit direct outreach to a defined list. Video works for awareness but rarely justifies the cost on its own. Choose the format from the message, not from the budget.
Exclude aggressively
Exclude existing customers, current opportunities and anyone who has already converted in the last quarter. On a platform where clicks are expensive, spending on people who have already bought is the most common form of waste.
Judge on pipeline, not on clicks
Set up the campaign so that its contribution is measured against qualified opportunities rather than form fills. If the CRM cannot attribute that far, agree a proxy with the sales team before launch and review it monthly. Otherwise the channel will be judged on metrics that do not reflect its job.
