TikTok Ads for Retail Brands: What Works in the First Two Weeks

The first two weeks on TikTok decide whether a retail brand keeps the channel. Accounts that treat it as another feed with the same assets rarely get a second month. Accounts that accept its native logic usually find a workable cost within a fortnight.
Lead with format, not offer
Discount messaging that performs on other platforms tends to underperform here. What moves first is a format that looks like something a person would stop to watch: a demonstration, a comparison, a genuine reaction. The offer still matters, but it works better when it arrives after the viewer has already engaged with the format.
Shoot vertical, shoot for sound
Assets that were cropped from horizontal footage consistently underperform, and the gap is large enough to distort a test. Budget for a small number of purpose-built vertical assets in the first month, even if that means fewer concepts.
Give the algorithm enough room to learn
Very narrow targeting in the first fortnight makes learning slower, not faster. Start broad with a clearly defined audience signal, and let the platform find the pocket that responds. Narrow only once a working pocket has emerged and you want to concentrate spend on it.
Decide the success measure before you start
Cost per order and cost per landing page view tell different stories on this channel. Agree which one governs the decision in week two, and review the other as supporting evidence. Without that agreement, every review turns into an argument about which number matters.
